Sanur, Bali?Library is the heart of education, therefore, it is difficult to separate the library role from education. The library, especially at school, has an important role in developing the students? life skills. Unfortunately, the school library is less popular than laboratories and practical rooms.
The school library is recently facing a big challenge.
This constrain is faced by a number of developing countries. And it became the actual topic the 42nd International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) Conference held in Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel, Sanur, Bali, (26-30/8).
IASL annual congress was attended by approximately 250 delegations from 33 countries, including United States, Canada, Australia, Holland, German, Japan, Ceylon, and Philippines. Whereas the host delegations were about 175 people, most of them were ATPUSI representatives from many regions. The theme of IASL Conference of this year was ?Enhancing student?s life skills through the school library?.
The theme was selected in line with the challenges faced by various countries, including Indonesia, in the field of education. The research conducted by New York Comprehensive Center on 2011 stated the correlation between the school library and the the students? life skills. As the result, the students’ achievements raised up to 29%.
The School is requested not only to improve the students? skills in facing the global challenges, but also how to anticipate them. Indonesia, with curriculum 2013 that was recently introduced, will prepare Indonesian children in the future, by optimizing their golden age to be the productive, creative, innovative and civilized persons. ?Through this conference, we will encourage the important role of school library in developing students? life skills through other programs and services,? said Vice Minister of Education and Culture, Musliar Karim.
IASL 2013 conference, according to Vice Minister of Education and Culture (Wamendikbud), was a very strategic forum because it can be a trigger to improve professionalism and competency of school librarian in this Nation. Besides, the Indonesia librarians might exchange their experience (best practice) with the library experts and school library professionals across the world. IASL was subject to the vision of Law No. 43 Year 2007 on Library and Regulation of Minister of National Education No. 25 Year 2008 on The School Librarian Standard.
IASL is dedicated to develop the school library development across the world. The school library provides important information and ideas for public in the basic of knowledge. Education is not only about score of test, but it is about how the integrate development process and individual?s competency. The knowledge obtained shall be accountable and effective in facing daily life demands and challenges.
Indonesia in National Budget (APBN) has allocated 20% of its special budget for education. And Law on Library has instructed that school/Islamic school has to allocate at least 5% of its operational budget excluding employee and capital budget to develop library. Library has been included in education functional budget. ?There is no reason for school to consider that the school library is not important,? said the Head of National Library, Sri Sularsih.
IASL conference was held by Educator Development Center (Pusat Pengembangan Tenaga Kependidikan), PMP Kemendikbud, National Library and Indonesian School Librarian Association (ATPUSI) and attended by a number of librarians with various background, academicians, experts, researchers, and library practicians. Besides, the 17th International Research Forum for School Librarianship was also held.
In this International event, National Library through Library and Information Service placed one of exhibition stands. This exhibition was participated by National Library in order to promote the collections and services of National Library. The National Library?s Exhibition carried a topic entitled ?Enhancing Reading Skill through Children Literature?.
The collections brought were scare books and magazines about reading learning. The oldest collection brought was Pengatahoewan Menghoeboeng Hoeroef published in Surabaya on 1883. This book was used to learn reading. In addition to books and magazines, the National Library also displayed some scare photographs and paintings describing learning condition in Indonesia.
