Kulon Progo, DIY ? All people agree that library holds the key of progress and decline of civilization of a nation. In addition to the role, library also plays a role in supporting education. Not only textbooks collection but also collection of books that is in the nature of enrichment that supports the process of learning so it expands the knowledge and mindset of the children.
If we want to know the standard of human quality of a nation, we can see what Japan has done. In the State of the Rising Sun, we can find many people who are already accustomed to reading activities at any time. At the bus stop, train station, airport or city parks, the Japanese have been accustomed to that. Meiji Restoration they made in the past now brings so much result. Japan becomes a great country in all sectors.
?Therefore the reading fondness should be improved. By reading we get various knowledge and technology so as to compete in the world level. Reading, open the window of the world,? said Regent of Kulonprogo dr H Hasto Wardoyo SpOG(K) in talk show of socialization of role and function of Library in Gedung Kaca, Wates, Wednesday (5/11). Regent Hasto continued, library for the people of Kulon Progo is very important because during this time the access is still limited.
Japan has made reading as a life style. Why don?t we do the same, asked the actress Cornelia Agatha. The actress who is popular acted as ‘Sarah’ in the old sinetron Si Doel Anak Sekolahan admitted to try to apply it with her two children. Even, she always took her children to the bookstore, looking for books they liked. Parents still have to monitor the books that become the children choice to fit the development of their patterns of thought. “Indeed I am more concerned with the condition of current technological developments,” she said. Children can easily access contents which can damage their mindset if not monitored.
There is a saying, “You are what you read”. Thus, a person who is familiar with reading will look different. A person who has a lot of knowledge from what they read, will easily accept new things which is positive, innovative, full of ideas, easy to understand the differences in thought, and wise to solve the problem.
Regent Hasto also reminded the parents to teach their children to read since early age. The role of family is very important because since early the children are cared and educated in a family. After that, the role of education is also fundamental in establishing the qualified human resources. Well, it is the role of the government that facilitate the activity of the library in supporting the role and function of the library in order to be exist, interested by the public, and not only as the place of books.
Head of National Library Sri Sularsih said that it is the time to make library as the best friend of Indonesian families. Not all people can access the knowledge through formal education, but all people can use library. Because library is a place of long life learning. ?Through the library, the people can do creativity,? said Sri Sularsih.
Because of the importance of libraries, Kulon Progo Regency government move the library building at a new location that is more representative, in the central of government. It is expected to be able to be occupied by next year while revamping the public garden area of Wono Winulang located next to the library building that will be used as a public park. The intention is greatly supported by Kulon Progo Regency Legislative Council. ?So, library is not only as the knowledge study centre, by the existence of the park then the people of Kulon Progo can be more comfortable to do the reading activity, said Chairman of Kulon Progo Regency Legislative Council Akhid Nuryati.
The seriousness of the Legislative Council on the development of library also showed support for the allocation of funds. Kulon Progo Legislative Council will fully support library funding because it involves aspects of education in it. The people deserved it.
Let?s make Library as The Best Friend of the Indonesian Family

Denpasar, Bali ? While holding a crayon, their fingers move swiftly. All sides of the picture is colored on a piece of paper. What can be seen from the picture is a group of children are having fun of reading books in a library. Some of them are standing, sitting neatly, and even lying down. At the top of the library there is a text that reads ?Library is The Smart Way to be Smart?.
Under the light of warm sun, the front area of Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Bali (Bali People Struggle Monumen) crowded by hundreds of Kindergarten Students that were having fun of coloring a picture. The situation became more crowded, because some of them were shouting noisily, wiped their sweat from their forehead because they feel hot. The parents were busy fanning their child so that their child does not feel hot.
Exactly at 10.00 Central Indonesia Time, the performance of Mahabagawati Dance of students Senior High School 2 of Denpasar was performed to mark the beginning of Roadshow events in the National Library in Bali, (15/10). Bali is chosen to be the peak location of series of Roadshow held by the National Library in 2014. Previously, the roadshow has visited six areas, among others Kepulauan Riau, Bengkulu, Aceh, Central Kalimantan, Bangka-Belitung, and Southeast Sulawesi.
Vice Governor of Bali I Ketut Sudikerta said that in the middle of the rapid development of digital and internet access affect the public interest in reading, the library still exist in the area. Nonetheless the library becomes a support, because human made the technology. ?Humans learn from books,? said Vice Governor Sudikerta.
The library and technology should support each other to improve the people?s knowledge.
Vice Governor Sudikerta realized that people are still lack enthusiasm to come to the library in the Regency / City. Therefore, they will attempt to fix the physical infrastructure and the quality of its human resources. In addition, the Bali provincial government also attempts to optimize the digital library, among others through mobile library car that targeting to remote area for easy access. ?We will plan which priority comes first and gradually, Vice Governor promised.
Lack of mobile library car was recognized by Head of Regional Library and Archives Board (BPAD) of Bali Luh Putu Haryani. Currently they only have 14 units making it less optimal to serve the public. Haryani hoped for more assistance so that the mobile library car could reach remote villages.
Hearing these expectations, Head of the National Library Sri Sularsih immediately agreed. The National Library of Bali will give some assistance and stimulants such as mobile library car, the development of digital libraries, other facilities procurement in this year. ?We wish that the assistance received can truly be maximized its utilization, especially by the regency / city in which its library service is not optimal yet,? said Head of the National Library.
Roadshow which is an annual agenda of the National Library should be able to increase the public reading interest especially the students given the reading interest of Indonesian people is still low, even in the ASEAN area. This becomes the subject of introspection so that the reading habits should be start from the family. Parents should introduce and familiarize reading in between the family activities. Education unit and school libraries can also contribute to sharpen reading skills of students to grow early understanding of literacy. Smart generation is a generation that fond to read.
Central Work Meeting of the Indonesian Librarian Association (Rakerpus IPI) XIX : Librarians Towards AEC Moment 2015
Pontianak, West Kalimantan ? In this era, librarians are no longer identical to the bookkeeper, but acts as the knowledge manager or professional information manager. Librarians, as a profession in which related to the management of knowledge has a very strategic role, because librarians are the spearhead in maintaining the continuity of knowledge.
In 2015, the countries in ASEAN region agree to establish Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN (MEA), or in foreign term it is called as ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The term means, the foreign community in ASEAN region are free to enter and work in any sector as long as meeting certain qualifications. AEC moment can also intended as means of ASEAN in catching up with the community of America and Europe in Human Resources.
Then, what about the librarian profession in facing the next AEC climate? According to the General Chairman of Indonesian Librarian Association (IPI) Dedi Junaedi, AEC moment should be considered as a golden opportunity for the librarians to develop his professionalism career. The Indonesian librarians can work abroad, and vice versa. ?Do not consider AEC moment as a constraint, but should be interpreted as a valuable opportunity,? said Dedi Junaedi during his speech in Gala Dinner event with the participants of Central Work Meeting of the Indonesian Librarian Association (Rakerpus IPI) XIX and national scientific Seminar in Community Center of Governor Office of West Kalimantan, (8/10).
This is where the seriousness of the librarians being tested. On one hand, librarian profession cannot be proud of yet, but on the other hand the demand of professionalism should always be improved following the development if science and technology. Librarian should be aware of the technology. The duty of the librarians is not only keeping the books nut also has a role as the preserver of science and knowledge. The paradigm must be changed. Both, either the library or the librarians, are required to modernize itself in order not to be out of date. ?The noble duty of the librarian should be made as pride,? said Head of the National Library Sri Sularsih.
The measurement results of UNDP in 2013 place the Human Development Index (HDI) of Indonesia at a position of 108 of the 187 countries of the world. Indonesian HDI is at a moderate level. To promote the Indonesian position for the better, it needs attention and cooperation of all parties, such as government, educational institutions and the public.
Related to HDI, the Regional Secretary of West Kalimantan M Zeet Hamdy Assovie said that the number of HDI of West Kalimantan is in rank 28 of 33 provinces. Being under the national standard 73,29. With this condition, the development of human resources became a priority, the library became one of them. In many corners of the city of West Kalimantan, there are many spots that can be gathering place for the people, primarily as a venue for business and socializing. These points will be targeted by the West Kalimantan province government to establish a reading corner. Another concern made by West Kalimantan province government, namely cooperation with the Military Regional Command of Tanjungpura by establishing reading corner at 18 border posts.
IPI, besides held a working meeting (Raker), it also held scientific seminar. A number of speakers were presented, among others from the National Library, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu), the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri), Military Regional Command of Tanjungpura, Librarians Certification Institute, and Head of the Public Library Service Sector of Serawak (Malaysia).
